Beovax Sponsors CRCH Mission to Africa.

John Gilpin | 12th April 2010

Rebecca Sykes is an up and coming Marketing executive and seemed the ideal person for us to choose when we decided to perform the recent major update to our website. When she told us of her planned charity mission to Africa with the Christine Revell Children’s Home we were only too happy to provide some of the essential sponsorship funding she required to enable her to go.

Here’s the latest report on her time in Africa so far:

"We've been in the South African township of Athlone for 4 weeks now and have just finished our time with the Christine Revell Children's Home for abused, neglected and abandoned children.

The home cares for 49 such children from 1 day to 6 years old. It is partially funded by the SA government and the rest is made up of a variety of sources, including fundraising, donations of clothes, food and crucially, time. Volunteers working here provide an extremely important element, the time, love and enthusiasm for daily hugs, kisses, games and one to one moments. With the best will in the world the staff at CRCH could never provide this in sufficient quantities without this global network of support people, who will travel half way around the world to help share the love.

Our day usually begins working in the crèche or classroom, helping the children with their educational play, such as number and colour games, building blocks, songs and playdough; to develop their fine and gross motor skills. We would then play outside on the swings (a firm favourite) and slides, climbing frames and trikes before lunch; invariably a messy affair! The children then sleep for 2 hours, during which time volunteers plan the afternoon activities such as face painting, chalk drawing, paddling pools, colouring or baking. In our case, we also spent the time doing some DIY!

The experience of the children at CRCH, especially in the afternoon, is completely dependent on the motivation, knowledge and creativity of volunteers. So we used our breaks to create a room for the purpose of teaching, informing and connecting volunteers to help them do exactly this.

We couldn't have done it, or enjoyed a month of such huge rewards working with the children, without the help of our sponsors, so thank you Beovax!"
